So I just installed my class A chimney last week and attached it to my cathedral ceiling box. I have yet to install the stove, so I just have some blue foam taped to the end inside. Today is our first rain since the install and I am getting some rain down my chimney with the rain cap on. Is this normal? I am using SuperVent 6” class A. Please advise. Thanks

I don't think any rain should get in there, unless it was raining sideways due to high wind. Might want to check the storm collar, and the outer wall seams to make sure they aren't leaking.
Yea. It not a lot, but I can hear the dips here and there.. it is windy.

I have the same pipe, supervent/selkirk with the deluxe cap. Rain always gets in but I have a T when it comes out the side of the house with a clean out in the bottom. When it’s raining or just not in use for a long period of time I leave the clean out off so the rain can drip out the bottom. So I guess it’s not uncommon but in your case it seems like a problem.
I bought the cheaper one. I dont have that problem. Maybe on yours its the way that rain falls between the wind shield and the actual cap? I thought the deluxe cap was way too much money although it did look very nice.

Yea I’m not sure. It has been super windy during the rain. I’ll give it a few more rainy days and see what happens. If it continues I may just rivet/screw a large piece of flashing on top of it?

Just wondering which deluxe cap you got. Supervent by Selkirk is made in 2 flavours JM and JSC. The 6" part# is JM6DRC (JM type) and JSC6DRC(JSC type). 2" wall for JM vs 1" wall for JSC.

Not sure? They both look identical. Mine came with a ceiling support kit from Lowes.
just measure your chimney outside diameter. the JM type is 10", the JSC type is 8"
I've got a theory that by having a thinner chimney wall (1") the rain will travel just 1" in order to get inside the tube. I purchased the other model with 2" thk wall and planning to install it soon. I'll let you know if I have problem with the rain inside the chimney.
Just checking the Selkirk "deluxe rain cap" which I\m planing to use in my install and I see the problem which I think you also have. Yes, the rain can go inside the chimney. There is a line of sight directly inside the chimney at around 15deg from vertical. Not sure what is the intend of this but I'll send an email to Selkirk for clarification. Here are couple picture for reference.

That generic one also is not a listed component of that chutney system and there for by code cant be used. That selkirk cap is horrible for sood though i would order a different selkirk cap

You need to take that up with Selkirk and Lowes. It is in the Selkirk catalog and sold alongside the Supervent pipe in store. I will keep an eye on it for soot per your comment. Here is the Lowes page. Note is says "SUPERVENT CAP".

If it is in the Selkirk catalog it is not a generic part at all. It is a super vent cap and it is fine. When you said generic I assumed you were saying it wasn't Selkirk.
Yes they are fine for oil or gas but get allot of buildup from wood. I don't use Selkirk so I have no idea about what model numbers are good. But the one Ludlow linked to looks like it would work fine and it is a Selkirk part.
It is also marketed as a universal replacment for any 8" O.D. diameter chimney pipe. The attachment method isnt specific to any certain manufacturer. IE "Generic".
Well it can't be used on other manufacturers chimneys according to code. But it is labeled as a supervent part so it looks like it should be ok for supervent. But I would have to look it up further to check the listing to be sure if I was going to use one.
Is a cap required by code? Im not talking about certain locales requiring a spark arrestor and their codes.
If it is required by the chimney manufacturer. Most require something to cover the top edge of the chimney to protect the insulation. But no code does not require a cap. It only requires you follow manufacturers directions.
