I bought an older Homestead that looks pretty good overall, but the rear firebricks are both broken. I'd heard that this can be done for a bit less than buying the kit online. How much disassembling will need to do get the old ones out and the new ones in? Thanks in advance!

Go to the Hearthstone Tech website. They have two rear firebrick replacement docs for the Homestead there. One shows a replacement guide for using standard firebrick.

If you can, take pictures and document the fix for others.

Thanks BeGreen. Much appreciated! I'll give it a whirl!!
Well, mission accomplished! I will not say that I did it the right way, nor should you follow what I did, but below is my process:
I removed the broken fire bricks and bottom grate and soapstone. I bought 4 -4.5" x 9" firebricks. I soaked them in water to minimize the dust when cutting. I tried a hacksaw with very little luck, so I got a masonry blade for my skill saw.
After cutting the inch or whatever it was off the ends of the bricks, I discovered that the "scrap" pretty much made up the difference in the rear of the stove. I'm not explaining this very well, so I hope the pictures say what I can't. In order to keep them against the back of the stove, I used some cement.
Like I said earlier, I'm sure I could have done this better, but I'm pleased with the final outcome.
