Recent quote for a Hearthstone Heritage install

Everyone,

Just had a Hearthstone dealer come by to give me an unofficial estimate on installing Heritage. He said I am looking at like $7,000 or so for the entire job. My question is that with a Heritage running about $3,700( with a rear heat shield and outside air kit), doesn't $3,300 sound like a lot for an install including material.

FYI..... My install will be a straight shot of 11ft of 2x wall black pipe running up from the stove inside the house. Then there is any outside SS piping, collars, straps, wall pass through, thimble,flashing, etc. When I ran some loose numbers of material pricing online with woodland direct, I am coming up with maybe $1,000 dollars, give or take.

Since this is my first quote, I just have a tough time seeing that $2,300 is on labor. I had read some online reviews which indicated that the company was notorious for inflating the final price of the job after the install was complete.

Now I am not trying to be cheap, but with everything I have mentioned, it just seems like the $7,000 price tag seems a bit high. I live in the NJ, so if someone could tell me what they paid for their install, esp. If you are in the North East, it would be greatly appreciated. Just trying not to get taken advantage of and keep them honest.

yes $3300 does sound high for a liner and install or a chimney install unless your house is very tall or some other extreme circumstance.

Base price is $2999.
Enamel is another $460.
Rear heat shield is just over $149
OAK: $65

Total: $3673

Assuming a enamel stove finish, that is actually dead on MSRP for the stove/heat shield/OAK... before shipping, straight from Hearthstone. $2300 in labor does seem steep, but without seeing the layout and knowing what kind of extras are going to have to be overcome, etc.. But I always believe that a great dealer is better than a great product. A product can be fixed, a dealer usually is who he is.. Second quote or more, should be done if possible. Depending on what is involved, even a self instal, that is going to be the cheapest, and for me, then I know it was done right. It isn't as easy as doing the dishes, but it ain't rocket surgery either.

That install price is a rip off. Particularly since you know this guy has a rep for increasing the price after the job is done.
Time for Plan B.

It's not like he is making $3,300 here for doing the install.It could be high? Its hard to say without knowing more about the job. You didn't mention if a hearth board was included. But you can't expect his materials price to be the same as a big box online store. Get another bid, its a good idea, just don't expect big box prices on parts.

What's your goal with the stove? If it's to reduce heating costs, you could do much, much better than a Heritage for $7,000! If you love the Heritage and have the money, I doubt dude's going to retire and run off to the Bahamas off your install. I mean, you could probably get a little better deal on the stove and get someone else to install it for a little less, but if you're going to pay someone for the all the parts and all the labor, it's going to cost a pretty penny regardless.
