So, I am a newbie trying to figure this out. I have a pre-fab fireplace and really want to put a wood burning stove in it without tearing it completely out as I have no money to do this. I was looking through the gallery page and saw this https://www.hearth.com/gallery/pics/woodcoal/source/woodstockchuck.html and was wondering if this would be possible in a pre-fab? Are there other stoves that use a 6 inch pipe that could fit inside of my 8 inch chimney and I could displace it outside of the fireplace? Can you guys and gals give some recommendations to a frustrated newbie??? This is a great forum and I am very glad I found it!

What pre-fab fireplace do you have? You first have to determine if your pre-fab even qualifies for an insert. Many inserts cannot be installed in pre-fabs. If you determine your pre-fab qualifies, you then need to measure the dimensions...height, width, & depth...to see what insert will fit. Lennox make some nice reasonable inserts (C-series) that allows for install in a few brands of pre-fabs. You may even find it "cheaper" to simply install a free-standing stove instead, and just use the pre-fab enclosure to route the stove pipe. I had a pre-fab fireplace myself, could have fit the smallest Lennox insert (C160) but opted to tear out the pre-fab & pipe and install a hi-efficiency fireplace & SL300 series high-temp pipe because I wanted something that throws more heat. I would have installed a stove if the room were larger. You will need to add a 6" flex liner in your existing pipe for either insert or stove option.

There are a couple stoves that might work here. We've had posters on the forum that say that Jotul has approved of a hearth installation for prefabs. You might also call or check with a Hearthstone rep to see if your prefab is approved to use with the Homestead in this application.

Not sure about stoves - but I was planning on installing a Regency I1200 small insert into my pre-fab - that was the only one that would fit. However I ended up demoing the pre-fab and having the high efficiency fireplace installed. I'm extremely happy with it. The I1200 still would have been a huge improvement over the pre-fab if I had chosen that..

I would not have been happy with the heat output of a small insert for my 2300sq. ft home with open floor plan & two-story foyer. A stove is would be the cheapest option for our "newbie" friend IF he has a very large room and is OK with losing some open space.
I just looked up a picture of the Heatilator Constitution on the web - NICE! I bet that heats the place up nicely. My house is only 1100 ft2 so the small insert might have done ok. My R90 still hasn't been tested by extremely cold weather but I expect it will do fine. As it is, the heat practically runs me out of the house.
How do I determine which pre-fab I have? It is a metal fireplace and the chimney is simply a pipe with no masonry around it. I can not afford to demo the current chimney and reconstruct it and the wife will not allow an installation in another room in the house, so I need to make this work somehow. As the picture shows, I am thinking about using the fireplace to just route the pipe out of the back of a stove or fireplace up through the existing chimney and purchase a freestanding stove or fireplace. Has anyone done this? Is it possible to use this chimney and put the 6" pipe in the 8" existing pipe? Does anyone have recommendations on a freestanding unit? Thanks in advance...
We'll need some more info before we can know what will work. The fireplace will often have a small metal tag with the mfg. name on it. This may be low at the bottom of the door of the fireplace. If you can post a picture of the unit, someone here might recognize it. How large is the fireplace opening (H, W, D)?

Yes, 6" liner can be put in the pipe, as noted above, it will be required. Once we know the area to be heated, we can make a recommendation or two. In the meantime, take a look at a Hearthstone Homestead as a possibility.

I have a Homestead sitting in front of a prefabricated metal fireplace. I ran 6 inch double wall duraliner all the way up.

I completely took out the fireplace and there is no metal tag anywhere. It is a metal insert and there is a "facade" to cover up the metal fireplace. The fireplace measures 24" in the back, 36" in the front, 26" tall and 24" deep. I am pretty sure it is not a Heatilator. The house is 1500 square feet and is a tri-level. We walk in on the main floor which goes upstairs and then down stairs from the main level. The master bedroom and bath are upstairs. The main floor we walk in on is very open. I can't figure out how to post a picture, but will when I figure it out. Thanks for the help...
