Remove metal firebox ?

Installing an insert, should/can I cut out all of the rusty metal firebox ? Old heatilator, you bump the firebox and it rains down rust.

You can leave it and install the insert with a proper, insulated liner.

You can cut it out or leave it. But cutting the whole thing out is a real pita.
