Feeling the Heat

A little background - one of my two system pumps (Wilo 16FX) occasionally started making a high pitched whine every few days, while running. I found that if I just cycle the pump on/off or to a different speed and back the whine stops; but nonetheless, it's been concerning me enough to either replace or at least make sure I have a backup on hand. After watching ebay for a while, I picked up two B&G Ecocirc Auto's and figured rather than having them sit on the shelf collecting dust, I'd install them and put the other two on the shelf for backup.

Without having any ability to measure flow, and without firing the boiler, I wanted to test the power consumption of my old setup (Taco 007 and Wilo 16FX) to the new pumps. Depending on the speed settings, the old pumps consumed a combined power of 135-155 watts. The new pumps - 20-30 watts. I figure I should save at least $10 per month over the old pumps and can now be much more confident that my backup power supply (2 large car batteries) will give me sufficient run time during a power outage.

I'd be interested in how the Autos work for you since I have two of the non-autos.

To be honest, I don't know that the Auto's are that appropriate for my particular setup. I suppose they would work best in an application with multiple zone valves, as they operate with a very constant differential pressure. My system has no control valves, beyond boiler protection, so they won't really need to do any controlling. Regardless, it's still nice to have a very wide range of speed control vs. either fixed or three speeds.

The B&G non-auto eco circ pumps I have are continuously variable for speed. I also don't have zone valves: one pump for each of two zones and one for the buffer tank.
Can you adjust your auto eco circs? It's been a while since I looked at this.

Yes, as far as I know, there are currently two versions of Ecocirc's - Auto and Vario (Auto has a red label, Vario has a black). Both appear to have similar speed adjustment dials, that are infinitely adjustable, with 1-7 numeric indicators. As far as how the control is accomplished in each, I really don't know; but it appears that the Auto generally operates at a constant DP - which will cause the resulting flow rate to modulate based on total system head. Meaning if you opened an additional zone -> the pressure would drop, causing the pump to speed to increase. The pump curves for the Vario would appear that it operates at a constant speed, based on the dial setting.
