You used stove polish?
That won't hold up very well against rust.
 
I used stove polish on my All Nighter and it worked OK... until I let it sit in the garage for a couple of years when I was living at a house with no chimney. It rusted a bit, and then I needed to clean all the polish off before painting it. That was a pain.

Paint is the way to go on steel.

Isn't that a grandma bear?
