Had regency L390E. It put out a ton of heat. New place has Fireplace xtraordinair. Both list 31000 BTU max with same 70-71% efficiency, but the regency was much hotter. Superficially they look very similar. Can someone explain why the regency is so much hotter?? Is the BTU rating rigged? Not happy.

'New place'? If the FPX is in a different structure with a different setup, it will be comparing apples to oranges. Can you give some details of the old vs. new?
Not sure what Regency does with their firebox/heat exchangers in their gas units, but they have always been kick-a$$ heaters.

I have a similar observation. Just swapped a c. 1996 Travis FPX unit for a Jotul Kathadin and the Jotul puts out WAY more heat than the Travis. The Jotul is actually too hot at times, it overheats the space if the outside temp is much above 32.
