I recently purchased a Vermont Castings Defiant Catalytic Stove (model 1945) to replace my old Defiant Encore. The new stove frequently over-fired (even with temp set to minimum) causing the exterior cast iron stove back to glow red on one occasion. I figured there must be some bad air leeks to cause this, so i cleaned out the stove and attached a shop vac to the flue collar and did my own air leak test by blowing air into the stove and then checking for any leaks at all gaskets and seams (of course, I taped all vents closed first). The result was that there were all sorts of leaks ... the bottom of the right front door, left side of ashpan, lower rear fireback seam (in the middle below the automatic air vent), seam on left side of fireback, left and right side seams (near the front of each side of the stove), and also under the stove top to the right of the griddle handle.
Vermont Castings has offered to replace the stove with either another Catalytic 1945 model or with a Non-Catalytic 1610 model. I'm having a hard time deciding which to choose. I have successfully used their catalytic Defiant Encore for 16 years and I need to heat my 3000 square foot house efficiently (the old stove was undersized....). I'm a little nervous about the EVERBURN system after reading all the posts.
Any opinions would be welcome!
