Feeling the Heat

Hey all,

How far above the top of the stove does a side heat shield need to go to protect side combustible wall? Will be using double wall pipe and PE Super 27.

Thanks,

Normally there is no need for wall shielding with the Super 27 as long as the manual's listed minimum clearance is honored or exceeded. There is no allowable clearance reduction. Why is is one being put up, peace of mind?

How will the stove be installed, diagonally in a corner or with one side parallel to a corner?

I must be confused. What are the clearances with the side stove shields attached?

The side shields on this stove should always be attached. That is how it was tested and certified.

Right. So what you are saying is that I can't reduce the side clearances from the stove less than 14in, even with a wall heat shield?

Correct

You could reduce the 14" to the minimum of 12" with a wall shield. The manual does note this allowance.

"Clearances may be reduced with various heat insulating materials. Consult local fi re codes and authorities for approval."

Check with your local inspecting authority to be sure they agree.

What page of the manual is that?

page 9, left column.

page 9, left column.

The only thing I am finding is this:

Clearances may be reduced with various heat insulating materials. Consult local fire codes and authorities for approval.

That's correct. I added it to my post, but you reposted too quickly.

Ok I follow you. So then the 12" is not specifically stated in the manual, is that coming from fire code?

Correct. There are no other guiding documents unless the stove manufacturer has tested closer clearances with a wall shield and publishes those closer clearance in their clearance table.

Ok. And could you tell me where you found this? Not that I don't believe you, I just need to have everything referenced before I go to the city with my plans. When I called them the other day I think I knew more about wood stove installations then they did and I have never done one before.

I think I found it:

12.6.2.1.2 Unless the appliance is specifically listed for lesser clearance, the clearance after reduction shall be not less than the following:
(1) 12 in. (305 mm) to combustible walls
