Hi,

We are finally replacing out 36 year old Hearthstone wood stove. We originally put in 8 " double wall stainless steel stove pipe.

My husband is wondering if it would be OK to simply slip some single-wall 6" pipe down the existing 8" pipe. ( Leaving the existing pipe where it is. )

Thanks,
Neea

It may be possible if the pipe is straight up, but also may be unnecessary. About how tall is the flue from stove top to the chimney cap?

If the existing chimney is in decent condition and was installed with proper clearances yes you should be able to. You may even be able to simply use the 8" chimney as well. But if it is 36 years old it is at the end of its life you may want to consider replacing the chimney with a 6" one..

Replacing the actual chimney I’d expect it to be easier to go from 8 to 6 than from 6 to 8!
