How did it end?

I saw something similar at the swamp at my workplace. A garter had a bullfrog by the leg and the frog was clamped onto the snake. Lots of rolling around in the muck.

Right about now we get a lot of snakes on the trail itching for the sun. Freaks out the dogs something fierce.

Not sure. I had bugged him during dinner long enough, so I let it be. If it choked down that frog, then it wouldn't be going far for a while, so I could go look again

What type of snake is this?

That's a garter snake. I am fine with snakes. In all my years in the woods, I've only seen one poisonous snake, a copperhead in a barn in Maine. They do their thing, and I do mine. We love them!

Copperheads, and timber rattlers, but they are very rare.

You ain't lived until you've grabbed a big rock in the woods and flipped it over to find a coiled-up 4 foot timber rattler poised to strike staring you right in the face.......

My great grandfather was bit by a rattle snake on his farm in New Hope, PA. He managed to kill the snake, and take its rattle as a souvenir, but died a few days later from the effects. My grandmother still had that rattle when I was a kid, but it was lost in the confusion of cleaning out her house, after her death.

Looks more like a toad than a frog. Did the snake have to give up its catch or did it succeed stuffing it down?

yeah, its a toad, surprising a snake would take one of those, it has a defense mechanism in its skin, glands that secrete some pretty foul tasting stuff. also the toad is puffed up trying to keep from getting swallowed, they can blow themselves up like a third again of their normal size.

snake is a common garter, we have them down here as well, non venomous i believe. good snake to have around.
