Solar kiln results

Had this batch in my solar kiln since June 4, pulled them out today to rotate them into big shed and move another batch into the kiln.

I split one of the larger pieces that were at the very bottom in the middle row of the kiln, and had good results, tested about three big pieces all relatively the same reading.

It got about 8-9 hours of directly sunlight a day.

Excellent. What species wood is this?

It’s Maple - I believe it to be red maple. I got the entire tree delivered to me the day it was cut down mid march.

So it’s pretty much all red maple I’ll be burning this winter - aside from a little bit of black locust I just got from a dead tree.

Sweet. Save the locust for those extra cold days.

Definitely will - I’m excited to burn it. I’ve never burned locust before but I’ve read that it’s as hot as oak and lasts just as long too. I might make it my overnight burn wood too.

Locust can be fussy to start, especially if the splits are thick. Load it on a hot coal bed or mix some of the maple in if a cold start.

Will do - I have a limited supply of it so it may just be the overnight burn wood only - coal bed should be good but we’ll find out. Thanks for the tip, should be fun burning it
