Been at this new house for a year... But just noticed some soot stains on the outside of the chimney up near the top. I didn’t get the chimney cleaned before the burning season last year... I was planning soot eater it myself this season, but am concerned buy the soot stains and am wondering if should call in a professional. We typically just burn in the mornings so we are not keeping the stack hot all day and burn with wood under 20% moisture content. Any advice for this newb?

Can you get up and take a look at it? The sooteater knocks the loose stuff down, but won't knock out glaze. It may be nothing, but it pays to be overly careful with fire.

I get soot streaking on the outside of my class A chimney. It comes from creosote and soot on the cap/screen washing off and running down the pipe when it rains.
It would be a good idea to check it out just to be sure you don't have excessive accumulation in the cap or screen. Screens usually clog up on the downwind side then then when the wind kicks up it causes some serious back draft problems.
