Last night I really had my 550 cranked. Started with a cold stove about 3pm and had a good bed of coals by 6. After adding a good number of splits the magnets on the top center inside both read 800 degrees. Using my IR the glass read 600 degrees and it was too hot to get a reading on the coals with the door open. How high have all of the other 550 owners burn their stove SAFELY? I have also insulated both sides of the stove between the fireplace walls with fiberglass . Any thoughts about this? Insert keeps the upstairs about 72 degrees.

Do a search on Jotul 550 and you will see this thread earlier this week. To sum it up, this stove does have a higher "sweet spot" than other stoves. On a full reload, start to back it down once you see some good flame, then shut the air down soon after. With the air shut down and the blower on high, you should be able to get her down to 650-700, which is cruising temp for the 550.
I have read before that you shouldn't insulate around your stove for fear of getting it too hot, Especially at over 800 degrees. Just a thought.
