Appalachian wood insert..just installed a 6" stainless liner with insulation, painted stove with rustoleum high temp paint...fire stove up to 400 degrees and there was such a bad chemical smell it burnt our throats, the the paint on the plate in front of the door was soft and tacky upon touch while it was burning...stove was painted 1 month prior to being used...this stove was in the house when we purchased it...could it be possible someone painted it with regular spray paint and now we have put high temp on top of that....the smell is toxic...new to this please help

Stove paint needs to "bake in" when the stove is fired up the first times. For that reason manufacturers usually recommend small break-in fires during which the stove slowly reaches new high temps. You may have put on more than what is usually applied by the factory. Open the windows and be prepared that whenever you need a new high temp some of that smell will return. If it does not go away within a few days then I would be concerned some wrong paint has been used.

It is very possible that they used something like enamel paint to dress it up for the house sale. But it would have "crinkled" up when you shot it with the new paint before you even started a fire in the stove.

Why did you repaint it?

We had the fireplace inspected and the sweep said the flue tiles were cracked. So when we took the stove out to install a s/s liner, we thought it would look nice with a fresh coat of paint.....wish we hadn't

Probably the same thing the previous owner did. Open the windows run it and stay outside. Its normal to smell at first fire for a hour or two. If your goes longer who knows?

I'd build a fire and go out for the day, as described above. Do it when its warm, windows open. Do it twice if you are sensitive to it. Get it all over with now. Wanna read what exactly what was on the can of paint?
