Surdiac Gotha 713 Hopper Question.

Hey everyone! We got our Gotha 713 installed, and I was reading the manual that said to fill the hopper up to 1" from the door... But if you look down in from the filler door it goes straight to the grate... Is that right? Or am I missing something? Because if I just fill it then won't I just have a heap of coal from the grate up?
I apologize if this is a stupid question... I can take pictures if needed in order to understand what I'm saying.

Could be right, coal burns best as a mass.

Not a coal stove owner, but this is what is in the old Surdiac manual in the Hearth.com wiki section. Hope that helps.
