Had my Stihl MS391 up for sale on local CL and had a potential buyer look at it. He starts it on 3rd pull, removes choke and goes WFO on a stone cold motor. I shouted and he backed off the throttle. I always idle cold engines whether 2 or 4 stroke, so I just learned I've been doing it all wrong. He let her rip again and I yelled the saw was his now! Unbelievable that he tried to lowball me too. I got my asking price and an education! Reason why he was looking for a replacement for his MS391? You guessed it, scored piston!

Yup, really-can't make this stuff up. Met at the town highway dept. and only has my work cell phone #, so when he has a problem, I can screen him.

Actually, with a 2 stroke, if you just give 'er hell right away, the piston can heat up quicker than the cylinder, expand, and "cold seize" the motor, which can cause scoring. However, if it didn't cold seize it, no damage was done.

Yeah ,,, I suppose if you started it up at zero degrees and ran WOT for 5-10 minutes straight. But not even a more-ahn does that .

Don't know how it would have ended up had he cold seized her-would have gotten ugly quickly Next time I will start and warm the equipment, then hand it over.
