The joy of the ceiling fan

When I started heating with my Fireview I had a working ceiling fan in the room. It stopped working the next summer and my wife couldn't find one she liked to replace it. Sooooo, three years later she finally picks one out and we replaced it.

Now that I have the fan running whenever the stove is working we almost get the room too hot with less wood burning. It's also getting more heat into the hallway and into the bedrooms. I'm kicking myself for not forcing the issue on the fan.

I completely agree! I have a 60 inch hunter running right above my insert and it makes a huge difference in the comfort of the room. Paired with the little Vornado floor fan in the hall they keep the joint nice and even.

Do you have it in reverse or blowing down ?

My stove room is pretty small with low ceilings but very central and I have a ceiling fan in the middle right up against the ceiling. I run it in "reverse" non-stop on low during the heating season to keep the room temp consistent head to toe.

I agree. We have an insert with a blower. Before I installed a ceiling fan the air at the ceiling level was much hotter than the rest of the room. Touching the ceiling you could feel how hot it was. You know then you are going to be losing a lot of heat through the ceiling. I installed a ceiling fan and it made the whole room warmer and spread the heat out into adjacent rooms much better. If you run it clockwise (blowing up) it will move the hot air down along the walls and so warm the room without feeling like you are in a draft.

Do you have it in reverse or blowing down ?

The instructions noted winter and summer switch so I it's on winter.

I keep mine on summer mode year round. The switch is 22ft up, so I do not mess with it. It still moves the air and evens out the first and second levels just fine. My first year burning I did not have a ceiling fan and the upstairs roasted and the main level always felt either too warm or not warm enough - now it always feels perfect.

Yep, summer year round...just noted the temp at 71, hit the switch and in no time, sez 77, nice, just like summer!

We have a Ceiling Fan in our bedroom (at the opposite end of our house from the woodstove), we have always debated about Fan blowing warm air down, and pushing cold air out.....or, Fan blowing upward to help draw cold air up and mix with the warm air, and wash down the walls to the floor, and circulate the air making the entire room warm ?
