Thread lock.

Can I ask what causes a thread to be locked so that no one can reply to it?

I think I know the thread you are referring too. I believe thread starters have the ability to lock their own.

Over stretching the rules of the forum. Moderators can lock out threads for what ever reason , totally gone off topic, abusing other members and it just seems to continue , strong political views etc etc., gone stagnant.. Just read the rules, you can watch a thread and see where it's headed, the lock is usually not surprising !! Though I have wondered why it was locked on a couple of threads. A user self locking might explain that.

i have never been able to truly figure out "the rules", with some threads locked that were very active and not vulgar, etc., while others raised my eyebrows and continued. I think there have been a number of changes in moderators, as well. I would not want the job, but I think it may be up to the subjective opinion of the moderator of the moment. Such is life on a website someone else owns. It's their living room, and we're all just guests at the party.

I'll add one to the list, double posting or nearly the same, sometimes by the same poster, frequently by a newbie and don't realize that their posting for several posts are moderated. Trying to post a very negative comment without any background as to why- trouble maker

It seems this forum is quite controversy adverse. Any sort of controversy seems to lock things down.
Not saying that is a good or bad thing, as I do not own this forum nor did I help in its making. I'm just glad it exists.

I don't mind controversy or debates as long as they remain civil. Let's discuss our differing point of views like adults without resorting to insults and profanity.

While thread lock down may seem mystifying, there may be posts that have already been removed from view in an attempt to get posters to stay on point. When the offenders don't get the hint, sometimes it is more expedient to just lock down the thread. For moderators, it would be easier to just ban the offenders. That said, most of the forum members stay on point. Often when they stray off topic, it is harmless and the thread gets back on track...

Controversy is not a bad thing but some members go too far... Many members come here for help, advice and just sharing their enjoyment of their stoves, not to get caught in a verbal smack-down.

When posts get off the rails or offensive, please give moderators a heads-up with the report feature. We don't always catch things before it gets out of hand...

I have been a mod on another board for many years, and the last thing we want is a bunch of "hate and discontent" flowing.
Also a thread that gets to the point of being useless and or has been hacked up waaaaay too much will either die its own death or be closed.

Some forums have a spot called "battle zone" and there, ANYTHING GOES (almost)
These types of things are unhealthy for the overall reputation of a forum as a whole.

We all come here to talk about our pellet stoves and on occasion the topic skews a bit, but its a happy and civil place.

Thread locks are a good tool when used properly to keep things in order.

I have used them a couple times in 15 years as a mod over at another forum.

Issues that require this type of action are usually self correcting, in that the folks that cause them to crop up move on.

Been here since 2010 and only seen a few locks.

I have to agree. Also as a former mod elsewhere, is's a tough job but the healthy life of the forum takes priority over individual threads. Some people post on forums for the sole reason to get others upset.

The other side of the coin is a forum like Trip A*****. I used to post regularly because I love to travel, then discovered that it only took a few members to gang up and hit the 'abuse' button to lock up threads. Threads that were negative about certain resorts were being removed daily. At that point, forums have no substance and become cheerleaders for vying factions.

It's a tough call to find middle ground that pleases everyone. If you disagree with a thread that has been locked, PM a mod and politely give your opinion. I've done that and the answer I rec'd and my concerns were both appreciated. Keep in mind that there may have been an offensive post that was deleted that you don't see and that has prompted the action too.

Unlike to two previous posts back to something related to a stove. Unless you have got a good recipe to hand down to cook on a pellet stove as great Grandfather used to write about eating both with the local Indians.
Everything probably happened to that can. Its been in three shops now going over twenty years old. A little dab goes a long ways.

I like blue loctite on little teeny tiny stuff that you don't want to murder, but don't want them backing out either.
