Today's slab wood scrounge.

The stack grows as the seasoned stuff in front gets used. Got a pile of big pieces that need split & a handful of longies that need cut. That's a project for another day.

No shortage of oak out there. It's been raining right smart over the holidays and the ground at the sawmill resembles a muddy plowed field. The mill loader has left deep ruts all through there. Man, that place is pigged up bad. Can't get in or out without a 4X4.

Nice stuff, I've been burning slap wood for past month and half. Easy loading and burns nicely with out a lot of hassle.

Got the splitting/stacking wrapped this morning. Found a few slabs of partly punky stuff; someone must've had a standing dead red oak in their load recently. Left some nice cherry slabs behind, should have grabbed 'em but I didn't.

It is a nice method of scrounging firewood. Pick through the piles and get want you want. Time-consuming, yes but not nearly so as felling, bucking, hauling and splitting.

I burn a good bit of slabs and love them. Local mill does rustic split rail fence from locust and sells the bundles of slabs for $10 a piece. I can barely fit one bundle on my 4'x8' trailer , great wood for little cash.
