So there I was yesterday almost upset that I couldn't light the stove as it was too warm out, almost 55, and my son looks at me and says, pop you want it to be cold out so you can burn wood and make it warm, its already warm. I guess he put that into perspective for me. I guess he is not a wood addict yet so what does he know. Later this week we are expecting temps in the 30s and 20s.

Very odd January weather - I'd rather it be colder too, but am not upset about saving the wood. Kids want some snow on the ground to sled etc and I wouldn't mind either really.
Gardening is all well and good, but I don't know what can grow in a 1-2 week pseudo warmup like this. I know we'll get cold again - I do look forward to spring planting, but this is not really helpful. I have wondered about indoor gardening though - need to get the light figured out (not to mention the time etc...)

It's a darn mess out here as well. Snow is pretty much all gone and it's been raining since Saturday. Got call a bit ago to come into work late, I guess the roads in Anchorage are a skating rink.
My daffofils are up 2 inches.
Time to start my vegetablke and flower seeds. I germinate them under the stove, then put them in a southern or eastern exposure window. Sometimes keep heated soapstone slabs under them for added warmth and better growth, especially with plants like peppers that like warmth. Some veggies, like celery and celeriac, really need to be started around now. A lot of the others very soon. Last year I planted things out in mid-March, it was so warm. Was eating peas before June in Southern Ontario. We only had one real freeze after mid-March, and they are calling for a warm spring again. Lots of veggies need to be started 8 weeks before planting out, and lots can go out a few weeks before the last frost, as soon as the ground can be worked.
Certainly time to be ordering seeds and planning the garden.
I don't use any grow lights, and start very healthy vegetables.
Still have ~3 months out here before can plant anything in the ground.

Nate, its a real mess down here too, its just mud every where. Its been really nasty out., very warm and foggy everywhere. Feels like im in London all over again. Im sure it will once again get cold, but Im not used to this weather at this time of the year. As far as saving wood, I have plenty and have access to a lot of wood, so i am not worried about saving it for next year. I worked hard last few years to use this wood that is now seasoned. lol.

I hit 59 yesterday, at mid-day I was outside working in the sun, it felt more like 70 or 75. I had one long sleave T-shirt on, and it was drenched I was sweating so much. CRAZY, but par for the course. I just bought a wood stove, it will likley not go below 40 or 50 degrees for 10 years. If I had bought an umbrella, we would see the deepest, longest draught in the history of the world. Maybe I should go to CVS and buy a tube of suntan lotion? We might then get a blizzard!

Ha! It was 55° a few minutes ago here. Now the cloud cover is back and it's feeling damp again. It's too warm to start a fire and just cool and damp enough to want one. Ah, then there's evening, and it should get chilly. Going to shovel out the ashes and clean the glass in preparation for tonight.

That happened when I bought a snowblower. I remember trying to test it on three inches of slush that year. My neighbor came over when I got it and said "good thing you got one, now we won't have to worry about snow this year." I guess the mojo on his was wearing off. We figured if we got one neighbor a year to buy a new snow blower then we would be good for a decade or so. He moved to Florida a few years later...
@NortheastAl, Welcome to the forum. We are almost neighbors, i am in Dutchess county. Please be careful with how you dispose of those ashes.
I could not stand it no longer fired the stove back up an hour or so ago.
Well, I didn't burn last night but did put a small fire in this morning to keep the family happy... and me too I expect I'll be able to clean out the stove tonight and get all the haze off the glass as well. This dreary weather sure makes it hard to get up and go to work in the morning though.
I also sure noticed it on the draft lighting up the cold stove this AM. The fire was just sluggish compared to a week or so ago when it seemed to leap to life - same wood etc so it must be that foggy 49* air outside that just didn't want to let the chimney draw nicely.
I believe we're supposed to have a low of 25 tonight so I'll get to light up again today... unless the forecast changes again for the warmer.
I expect I'll be able to clean out the stove tonight and get all the haze off the glass as well. @Katwillny, I know, we are close in proximity. I put my ashes from the bin to a galvanized can outside that has a bail that goes over the lid to keep it secure. After I'm certain it's out I add it to a compost pile, usually if there is snow on the ground or if it is raining or wet from rain.
Temps are supposed to go down to the low 30s high 20s tonight. I may try to sneak out early from work today and clean out the stove and have it ready for tonight and the rest of the week. We may see some snow tonight into tomorrow. nothing major but enough to make it harder to move around with a load of wood.
