I am in Ohio visiting family and am seeing an abundance of Osage Orange and black walnut fruit/nuts around.

I would enjoy trying to replant them at my home in CT. However I am not sure this is wise or in accordance to USDA policy and I can't seem to find anything definitive online.

I know several states restrict the transport of black walnut wood due to TCG but have exceptions for process lumber and nuts/hulls.

Anybody got some advice/wisdom to share?
 
I don't know what TCG is and can barely spell it, but I hate black walnut trees. If you have an area that's away from your lawn and you don't have to pick up all the walnuts each fall the trees might be okay. The wood can be pretty when harvested, but if you're [planting trees now you may not be around when they are ready for harvest. I've had twisted ankles from walking under the trees at night, and spend HOURS each week picking up walnuts before I can cut the grass. Then the following week do it all over again. And what can you do with the nuts? I chuckle when I see all the "Free Walnuts-you pick!" ads on craigslist.

I get a certain evil pleasure when I cut a tree down. Hmm, I must have pent up emotions. I just realized I've been typing long and fast. Good luck! Curt
 
Great idea in theory but unless you are bringing back started trees, your kids grand kids can see the fruits of your labor. I have a big ole black walnut tree in my yard and it is a great tree and the wood is outstanding. The fruits/nuts are a huge problem. I hauled 50 cu ft of walnuts, all picked up by hand to the woods. The nuts are not terrible to de-hull but they are tough to crack. I have made tincture out of the hulls and dried a few here and there for the wife to bake with. The best thing to do with them is to soak the hulls or nuts in a 5 gal bucket of water and then poor that water in gallon jugs. When fishing season rolls around, pour it into the ground and watch the night crawlers come flying out!

Kids love it on camping trips because it is instant bait.
 
About 30 years ago the wife brought back a big sack of walnut from her aunts in MO. Squirrels got to them and now we have at least 50 very large trees all over and little one sprouting.
 
Yea i dont pick em up i mulch em wit the mower. I use to pick them up when i was a kid for money. They are worth record high here in mo this year.
 
Their property boarded lake Stockton. Had a little over 10 acres. Both aunt & uncle died within a week and everything was auctioned. I've been kicking myself in the a$$ for not buying that property. Think in went for about 20K
