In The Woods
We have lots of these dead trees on our property, not much to go by except the bark.

Elm?

I would same elm, try splitting some. I have quite a few dead standing elm. I love them because they don't seem to rot.

Elm. Good wood when it's peeling like that. It is way easier to split when in that condition versus fresh. When it looks like that you really probably don't need to split it it other than to get it in your stove. Much of the drying is probably already done.

Thanks, I'll have some down in the next two weeks or maybe drop a few this week.

zap, there is no doubt at all about that being elm. Good for cutting now with most of the bark off but if you need time, there is no problem leaving that for another year if it is still standing. I've left them for a couple years when like that and they turn out really nice. Easy to split then too.
