I recently started a contracting business and my jeep Cherokee isn't cutting it. I'm on the market for a real truck. I pull a fairly heavy 7x12 cargo trailer with my tools and supplies. I'm typically a ford guy but I'm in the market for a diesel and am a bit Leary of the power stroke....

depends on which powerstroke. newer is ok, older 7.3 is ok. its that batch in the middle to stay away from. the 6L ones...
 
great choice except for the short bed. You will regret it down the road.
 
If you're a Ford guy, then just get a Ford with a gas engine. A Diesel seems like a huge waste of money, unless you're planning on towing a much larger trailer in the future. What you have now would be easily handled by any half ton pickup.

I've got a 2005 F-350 with the 3V 5.4, and I love it.

That Dodge looks like a nice truck, but they want WAY too much for it. No way would I pay $25K for a 10 year old truck with 150K miles on it. I paid half that for my truck, 3 years ago, with half the miles on it. The Diesel makes it worth more, but not that much more.

Also, it looks like it may have a little bit of a lift kit in it. That, along with the custom wheels and tires, big exhaust tip, and the aftermarket tail lights are all clues that this truck may have had the snot beat out of it. People that add all that stuff to their trucks also tend to not treat them nicely . Those fender flares look nice, but they're likely hiding rust.

I have a 7.3 diesel ford. Great truck. It is the shortbed and the penalty with that is a much smaller fuel tank and of course less bed space but the ford short beds are nearly 7 feet long so not a big loss. The fuel tank sucks though when towing heavy and getting 11 mpg.

The ford diesel in my truck is legendary. It's the best. I wouldn't get another diesel though since they can be so ultra expensive to fix. I'm one small failure (think head gasket) away from the repair bill exceeding the truck value.

Gas V-10 seems to be the ticket. Sure it drinks gas but you can buy the truck much cheaper and repairs are much cheaper.

That's about the going rate for a 5.9 Cummins truck, prices have been inflated since they started putting emission controls on the newer trucks.

You really can't go wrong with any of them, they all have their quirks. I'll agree that diesel is nice but unless you're pulling a lot of weight long distances you won't really see any benefit over the long run.
 
Don't get a cummins. If you don't like it, you'll be stuck with ituntil about 700,000 miles or until the wheels fall off.

Well I pulled the trigger on this one. They guy is near me and threw in a nice cap too.

congratulations, as you can see if my avatar I have the 2002 version, also had a 2000. You will never have a problem with a Cummins, Change the oil and fuel filters it will run for 400,000 miles easy. With the 6 speed you will always have a gear with the right ratio. I get consistent 20mpg running empty, driving normal.

If you do the EGR delete or upgrade, the 6L is actually a pretty good engine.

I guess the nice thing about the 6.0 is that it's been around long enough that people have figured out what the issues were and how to take care of them. The ones that were going to have problems have almost all had their problems. SO, an educated buyer could probably score a sweet deal on one!
 
That's very true. The 6.0 gets a bad rep, but it's problems are known and the fixes are known. Once you address the issues, it's a great engine.
