I've searched and read every article on using registers to vent heat from a stove in the basement. However, I cannot find where (i thought) i read the distance the register should be from the wood stove. Ideally, the best place for heat distribution is right above the stove, but for safety reasons, I think it needs to be at least 6 ft away and use a damper??? Is this correct?

I put mine adout 5' straight above the stove, and my insurance guy passed it.

I think the only spec is a RETURN (suction) vent and that spec is 10 feet from the stove. This is, IMHO, for the reasons of negative pressure - meaning that it could suck smoke out of the stove!

As to dampers, etc. that is probably somewhat individual - for instance, in a raised ranch or split level, the lower levels might be part of the building envelope and not subject to dampers. But basements that were formerly closed off may require different treatment.
