I'm now looking at a Vermont casting Vigilante stove in good shape for 400.00, is this a good stove and is the prie in the ballpark they are going for ?

It's an old, serious heater. My brother still burns in one. You'll need to examine the back plate for warping and assert that the bypass damper is not warped and works well. You could also check the operation of the thermostatic damper by blowing air from a hair dryer on it. $400 seems high, but if it is in cherry condition, maybe it's worth it to you?

They had glass doors in the early 80's , chances are one broke and they just threw a solid door on there. 400 is a fair price, if you check ebay and crigslist I have seen some for a bunch higher and a bunch lower. We still heat our house with the Viigilant and it heat likes a champ, burns all night and like said eailer it will pump out the heat so if you have a small area that it will be in this may not be the right stove. It may burn a bit more wood than newer stoves but for us that is not an issue, if it is in good shape and in your budget buy it. It is cheaper to run than an oil furnace. Again we love ours, but just remember it has an 8 inch flue something to consider if you already have a chimney or are looking to buy one.

And for sure make sure that it does not need any replacement parts before you buy it. Last year VC doubled the price for some of the replacement parts for thier stoves.
