Does anyone know if the early 1977-78 Vigilants had any type of steel plate next to each firebox side where the fire is. The firebox sides on my (new to me) Vigilant are the cast side plate only, no baffle plate, or fire brick. Was there originally some sort of protective plate or refractory there to keep high heat off the cast stove sides.
Do the Vigilants have a history of cracks in the side panels due to high heat? Thanks, Walt
