if any of you remember this thread: https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/on-hold.87441/. in a nutshell, i got the go-ahead from my landlord to install a wood stove so i started getting a good stash of wood going. that came to a halt when my neighbor (upstairs) complained. i started looking for my own house and got hung up in the pre-approval process so i gave it up.

fast forward to this spring... that annoying neighbor went from annoying to straight up aggressive. she started stomping around and screaming through the floor at the slightest noises we made and eventually got into a confrontation with my wife while i was at work. when i told her to take it up with the landlord, a drama bomb exploded and my landlord had to mediate and decide how to keep things from further exploding. his decision was to not resign our lease ending in July (this was in May) reason being we were looking to move anyhow. i can understand that from a business point-of-view but...

i wasn't happy (VERY VERY mildly stated). not only that, the passive-aggressive harassment continued. our plan was to continue renting and hunker down financially to put down some money on a house and now we were being forced to move again. we drew up a plan to buy a house in the two-plus months we had left in this place and got to work...

after over two months of looking, applying, a billion phone calls, text messages, emails, faxes, signatures, sleepless nights, meetings, inspections, what-ifs, ups, downs, we closed on our modest little house yesterday afternoon. it felt like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders and chest. i'm not gonna say i was ecstatic walking away from closing, more relieved. i could take a full breath again for the first time in a long time.

so during this time, my anger slowly became overtaken by the new house and everything that goes with the process of buying a house, my first house. i could care less about my neighbor and everyone up and down has said basically the same thing: let it go, she will continue her sad existence until the bitter end and everyone will have moved on to better things. i don't know what runs through the mind of a person like that, but whatever consumes her is great. after doing what she did to get us effectively kicked out, we've been told by other neighbors that she has decided to move out. i've also been told that didn't make the landlord much too pleased and i don't blame him. oh well, i guess.

to the business at hand now... i own a house!!! i can have a wood-burning appliance. i can stack wood. i'll probably be asking questions and shopping for either a stove or insert. feels good to be back. thanks!

Good for you. Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better.

granted i don't know the entire situation but sounds like she just wanted a little peace and quiet. Everywhere i have lived there's always gotta be that one neighbor that leaves his dog bark all day tied outside or blares his music for the whole neighborhood to hear. Hope you're not one of them.
Enjoy your new house, after living in apartments for many many years i completely understand your new found joy of home ownership. Now you can make that modest house into your castle.

Congrats, toonces! Now you're the landlord. How many square feet? Age? Layout? Masonry or zero-clearance fireplace and where is it? Going pellet, catalytic, straight wood?

We bought our first home this year as well, though our old neighbors across the wall were blessings we were sad to leave behind. Seriously, after a few years of leasing out a thousand rental homes, I realized that 80% of my work came down to mediating between neighbors who refused to get along. We could have cut our property management staff in half if all the tenants would just be calm, reasonable, and mind their own business. But hearing both sides of everyone's stories also showed that you never know what the other guy is going through.

Congratulations. I'm glad it worked out in the end. Sounds like everyone is better off. Now on to the stove install!

yeah, things are looking up for sure. got some work to do to tidy up the finished part of the basement and some other small things but then... time for some heat. mid century ranch, solid as a rock but the brick fireplace is in the corner of the living room which is on the opposite side of the house from the bedrooms. the house is under 1200 sq-ft, though so hopefully not too hard to heat.

yeah, who knows what the other side of the story was. if i knew, we might be in a different situation but the method of communicating to us was way off. the loud music came from the other side of the ceiling for longer than i care to remember.

What is wrong with the septic. Be careful of the cheap fix. Bandaid fixes often fail if the root problems are not addressed. Will they be doing a full septic plan approved by the county?

yes. my biggest concern with the house was the septic and they've already got the permits with the local health district as well as their blessing for the install.

Good deal. I'm excited for you.

Congrats on the new estate. Now comes the fun part of being a home owner. Shoveling snow, lawn, maintenance, etc. >> - just pulling your leg. You will love being the king of your own castle.

Congrats on the new house. Sounds like an ideal lay-out as you want your sleeping areas slightly cooler anyway. Hoping your neighbors are like minded individuals which keeps the peace... remember to invite them to the housewarming party!
