Hi all,

Recently had our Comfortbilt HP21 cleaned/inspected and they found a crack in one of the 90 degree vent joints. We were quoted almost $2k for repair which certainly took us by surprise. We have DuraVent PVL pipe and it looks like they quoted replacing it all with PVP (they claimed they don't sell/can't get PVL). We're talking to them as well as another company (who also only has PVP) about potentially installing PVL if we buy it.

Problem is, the angle joint seemed to break in the first place because the pipe is being twisted and not supported properly. Both the vent and intake are going through an 8" thimble that used to be for a wood burning stove. We weren't here when this was installed but the previous owner/installer put a plug in the existing 8" hole and used a hole saw to run the pipes (3" for vent and 2" for intake). The plug on the interior of the wall broke so it is just hanging there.

I don't even think there's a proper thimble on the market that could be retrofit into what we have now without some expensive masonry work. I can get new PVL and a new 8" endcap to recreate the bodge which I think is the only way forward without breaking the bank. We're waiting to hear back from some other companies but I am concerned as a few thousand dollar repair really isn't in the budget right now. I'd be interested in doing it DIY except I'm not sure if that would mean problems with homeowners insurance goodness forbid something happens.

Pretty much looking for some advise and to see if anyone has ever seen something like this before. Thanks!
