well help me figure out exactly what to with this wood stove insert.

I found out that the company who manufactured the insert is no longer in business. My owners manual is quite vague and there's is no info about this stove insert other than being on the list of approved or certified EPA stoves/inserts. I even contacted the previous owner.

Its a Dominion 005 Stove insert with optional Catalytic kit---problem is PO opted out of getting the kit.

So do I have a Non-Cat stove?

I have a magnetic thermometer about 5 inches above my stove on the pipe. It reads almost 800 degrees on start up fires and reloads and settles down to ~450/500 when its cruising and when i have the damper/bypass closed.

Thanks for the help

I would have to say not cat means no cat. One of the 500 or so more qualified individuals on this forum might chime in. At least this will put your topic back at the top. :)

Maybe you just need to buy the catalytic convertor? Unbolt the cat chamber and take another picture. Measure it up while you have it open and see if a stock catalyst will fit. Condar has the following listed for all Dominion units:

CC-508 Dominion Size 3.6 x 5.5 x 2.0 16 Cells Canned - $182

I was wondering if i could simply add a cat because it seems as if the stove doesn't burn secondaries when its gets going

I took another picture last night of what looks like the cat chamber.

Can I order a custom cat an slide it in?

Do I have to make a bracket to secure it?

Maybe. What is the size of the cat chamber? It looks like a cat in a metal can might work, but dimensions are necessary to proceed.

without the cat you dont have a non cat stove as in a stove designed to burn efficiently without a cat. You'll just have a smoke dragon with little or no way to slow down the heat before it goes up your chimney. Either buy a cat or get a different stove. There are places called Hearth Shops where you could walk right in and in most cases find a friendly pro to help you figure out more about the stove.

Good suggestion. This is a big catalyst. It's going be be pricey but will really clean up the burn. If no luck, here is a link:

This is a guess of what might fit, but be sure to double check measurements and confirm which dimension they mean by width vs depth or height.

yeah, i don't think I'm going to burn this thing until i get one. I knew something was up, especially when my stove pipe temps were hitting 850-900 when the bypass was closed.

Happy to find some good info/advice.

i think that will definitely work. Is there a particular reason why i should go with a canned combustor? It looks like the gasket material on there uncanned combustor expands and could quite possible fill the void

That's a good question which I am not sure about and don't want to mislead you. I thought the uncanned combustors had a specific, tight receptacle for the catalyst, but could be wrong. Ask whether it needs a gasket kit too. I think that you will need the gasket and the canned unit, but am not sure. When you call around for your unit, ask and let us know what you find out.

Also found this via Google for the same part, though I have no prior knowledge of this site or Firecat combustors, but the pricing is good and includes the gasket kit.

FYI, your stove's cat size is similar to the Earthstove 1003-C - (broken link removed to http://firecatcombustors.com/Catalog/cat-Webco.htm)

Can you provide a full front view of the insert? I find the 03 and the 07 listed, but no 05.

I'll call some stove shops after the holidays..

But here is a picture of the front. Dominion 005
