What designs in stoves allow them to have closer clearance to combustibles?

Im curious to know what designs in UL certified stoves allow them to be placed closer to combustibles. Is it the firebricks that line the wall inside the stove that impact their tests or some other sort of design?

For example non tested stoves can be 12" from combustibles with a 1" spaced metal shielding on the wall for code purposes. I was wondering what designs can be added to a non UL certified stove that would allow them to be closer to combustibles. An additional heat shield bolted to the stove rear? Firebricks inside or outside the stove?

Im sure for UL tested stoves they place the stove "X" distance from combustibles and fire it up and monitor combustibles temps for "X" period making sure it does not rise above "X" temp its considered safe.
 
It's not UL design, that is just a tested safety certification. There are UL tested stoves with 30" clearances. In general terms, a stove with a convection jacket will have closer clearances than an unshielded, radiant stove. Compare for example the clearances for the Drolet Myriad vs the Drolet Austral. They have the same stove body, but one is shielded with a convection jacket and the other is unshielded. The single-wall stove pipe clearances are:
Legend III = 14.5" rear, 12" side
Austral III = 14.5" rear, 20" side

Firebrick helps, so does double-walled stove pipe in the case where the stove pipe clearance trumps the stove clearance as in these double-walled sp clearances.
Legend III = 7" rear, 12" side
Austral III = 7.5" rear, 20" side

No you cannot reduce clearances below 12" to combustibles with an unlisted stove legally.
