I have a osburn 2500. I am new to the air tight stoves. I bought this unit used and it is in great shape. My question first of all is what are the tubes in the top of the firebox with the holes and what are there roles? This unit it 100% sealed but on top of the firebricks (the bricks on the top) there is some fiberglass insulation. What is that purpose. And, last but not least, there is a metal plate that was laying on top of that insulation stuff... what does that do? This will be the second burning season that we are using it and I am trying to eliminate a severe whistiling (during windy days) and a CONSTANT smoke billowing out from the door when it is opened to add wood... I am in the process of cleaning the thing to get ready for the upcoming snowy season...

I am laughing as I type this... these are things that I should have asked BEFORE buying it.

Is the model number is correct? Check the back plate to see if this is a model 1500 or 2400? Then go to the Osburn website and download the manual. I suspect that will help a lot.

For design, the non-cat section of this article should be helpful:

As far as the smoking goes, can you describe in detail the flue system on the stove? When was it last cleaned? Was the cap screen cleaned at the same time?

You might enjoy this video made by Osburn as well. It shows how the stove works and how it's made.

thank you Mr Moderater... I am loading the video as i type!

As far as the other question... flue... not sure exactly what that is... but I think it has something to do with the chimney. On the TOP of my stove there is a 14 in riser into a 90... from there go 18 inches into the wall. Other side of wall is chimney (grey cinderblock style) in the garage... No cap on the chimney. Original clay liner. Cleaned before season and at least once during season.

Need to know how tall the cinderblock chimney is and what is the size of the tile liner. Reason being that 99.9% of these issues are either with the wood not really being seasoned or the flue being inadequate to provide good draft. The worse case scenario is a combination of both issues.

Also, is there a cleanout door on the bottom of the cinderblock chimney? If yes, it must be sealed tight to prevent air leakage.

I have an Osburn 2000. The tubes on the top are the secondary combusters. Those tubes get really hot and then burn off the smoke in the firebox, giving you more heat. The fiberglass insulation, it just insulation I guess. The metal plate on top of the fiberglass is the weight that keeps it down. As to your chimney problem, I have no clue. You could try just opening the door slightly for about ten seconds before you fully open the door. That should help some. I hope you have a good buring season!

thanks so much for your replies... the wood that I burned last year was fairly green... and the door at the bottom of the chimney, it closes tight... but is there supposed to be a gasket for it?

this is NOT related to my post, but I am VERY excited so I feel the need to share... I just scored 10 face cord of KILN dried wood for $650 delivered!!! Is that great or what!
