my wifes dad has brought me tones of wood . the types are ash , popular , gum and oak . has just been cut . when can i burn this and should i burn it. do i need to start splitting or is this next years wood . need advice.

If split now, the ash, poplar and gum will be next years wood. Oak the year after.

Split it all now, burn the Ash next year and the other stuff the year after that.

huh If i had nothing else I would burn the ash and popular this year and the rest next year

No matter what wood you burn, get it split ASAP to get it to drying. You might be able to burn the ash yet during the cold of the winter but doubtful on others. The oak, it depends on what type of oak it is. If in the white oak family, 2 years; if in the red oak family, 3 years.

The ash can be burned a little green if needed so that should help out some. Just make sure you keep a hot fire and full when you still have plenty of hot coals.

Anybody got any thoughts on Sweet Birch? I split it today, but don't plan on burning it for 2 years. Is it possible it might be ready next season if stacked in 1 row? They are pretty big splits.

I guess it depends on the stove. I've burned same year Birch (cut in January and burned in November) but it's definitely better the next year.

Remember your FIL this Christmas ...sounds like a real stand up guy to me.

I wood suggest you wait on the poplar for a year. Something like 3900 lbs per cord green tells me that there is plenty water in there.

soft wood sheds water very fast silver maple another one that will do the same

+1 . . . a little late for this year . . . but a good start for next year and the year after.
