For all you fellas who have a hard time convincing your wives. We just got our second natural gas bill this fall since heating with our wood stove and it went down from last month and was only $37! My wife is the one who picks up the mail and organizes the bills in the office etc, so she saw it first and was quit excited to show me when I got home. At our old house, which was much smaller, we payed an average of $150 a month to heat. Granted we do burn pellets up stairs and they ain't free, but based on our current consumption 1 $200 ton will last us the winter. Makes me excited at the thought of cutting more wood!

LOL. She was the one who had to convince me! In our case, though, it wasn't a financial matter since our electric rates are very low. For her it was more a matter of coziness and less dependence from the grid. And I agreed.

I was the one who wanted ours put in just to make sure no matter what we had a heat source to fall back on. So this year we have started using ours and its the same feeling that it was nice to save some money. And my wife who hated the whole idea of a wood stove because "they are dirty" also likes it now and even has started asking me to start fires back up if I let it get too cool. But I don't care for temps above 73 so I always push it to cool things off a little. However its like reverse psychology, just makes her think we need to burn more.

We went out of town yesterday, so we started up the propane boiler to heat while we were gone.
As we were letting the fire die out in the stove, my wife exclaimed that she felt like we were letting the heartbeat of the house die. She wanted to start a fire the moment we got back.
I did take the opportunity to do a little mid season stove maintenance and cleaning while it was cool.
Its back up and running now!

I love seeing zero therms usage on my bill each month. 80 degrees in the house and the gas furnace isnt even turn on. Wish i could get the electric side of the utility bill down some now. I figure my wood furnace will have paid for itself after this (2nd) winter

That'd be super funny, I'm kinda a stealth burner, my firewood and chimney are tucked away on the back side of the house, and I don't make much smoke either

Our stove was the Wifes idea.....I fought against it all the way......she loves the stove, but hates that I'm hooked on scrounging, cutting, splitting and stacking as much wood as I can.....and we smile whenever the oil truck passes by

My wife loves wood fire, inside, outside, it doesn't matter. She really enjoys sitting in front of the stove, sipping rye and telling me ALL about her day.
We're rebuilding our fireplace and when I told her we wouldn't be burning until we got a new stove in late February, early March, she begged me to put the old one back in until then.

The stove was more my idea than DH's. I didn't actually intend for it to be the only heat source, but when it came down to it, the house needed more work (read $$$) than we planned and we didn't put in a new boiler and in floor heating like we originally thought we were going to. At least we don't need a big fat LP tank in the yard!

Some times I swear my wife loves it more then I do. I told her last night that I may run the boiler tonight as well as the woodstove (forecasted -10 without wind chill) Her face dropped to a huge frown and the very thought of burning oil in the furnace seemed to pain her greatly. I had to explain to her one night of running the furnace in conjunction with the wood stove is barely going to use any oil and save us from dealing with frozen pipes.

Yeah, I've gotten a lot of inspiration from this forum...along with plenty of knowledge and advice of course!

I think it was last year that I created that shirt and others after a few conversations with folks on here. Right now they are here http://www.cafepress.com/gear4gearheads/9341247 , since we sold our press and cutter when we bought the Cottage because we don't have enough room here to make them ourselves anymore. Make less $$ this way but it's less work and more time to scrounge and split wood (which is enough work in and of itself)!!

Today is the first day that my wife is in charge of the stove. I always take care of it but today she took the day off of work and will be in charge of keeping my morning fire going all day. Its been three hours and she's already texted me saying that it is below the burn zone and she's asking what she should do.

I think this is the best way for her to learn, because me talking at her as I do the work doesn't seem to sink in. One of two things is going to happen when I get home from work. She's either going to say that she liked tending to the fire or shes going to ask that next time she stays home if she could just keep the oil heat on. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that she enjoys it.

I hear ya. I just got a call that the pipe temp dropped to 200 and the house has gotten 2 degrees cooler in the last 20 minutes. She is already getting frustrated because she says the fire goes out immediately when she closes the doors. I am trying to coach her on the phone to close the doors slowly and make sure the fire is getting air, etc. I can tell that she's not thrilled about tending to it.

Our PG&E (pacific Gas & Electric) has the gas and electric combined. It goes up $10 a month in the winter. I suspect it is for needed lighting because it gets dark earlier.

Here here!! Propane guy was only able to put 50 gallons in my tank last week and its been super cold this year! Loving the wood heat!

My wife said it was HER stove! She doesn't really care about the savins. We turned our Propane Heat off once the stove went in. I saved $5000 a year. My wife loved the stove for it's warmth, the viewing, and she loved feeding it.

My job was supplying quality wood, keeping the bin full, removing ash, and cleaning the glass occasionally. Who knew it was so easy to please the Mrs.? Just get a stove and scrounge a ton of wood!
