I went aheard and bought the fllor model Canterbury. $1600. Do I also need a grate? I didn't use one with the Blaze King, but don't know if I do with the new stove. Thanks
Also- should I do a couple first-burns outside? Are these stoves known to smell bad at first? I have asthma. Stove is not to heat house- I am getting electric baseboard.

Canterbury?? Do you... possibly... mean "Craftsbury"?

And are you talking about a grate on the bottom of the floor of the stove, to keep the wood up off the bottom? if so - probably not. check the manual.

It may outgas the enamel a little, same w/ the stovepipe, but it's usually not real bad. My wife has asthma and allergies and our new Heritage burn-in's never bothered her.

But if you really do mean "Canterbury" then disregard everything I said, 'cause I never hearda sucha thing.

Page 25 of your manual: "Do not use grate or elevate fire."

Hearthstones work best w/ a nice ash bed under the fire. build new fires right on the ash bed. When new fires burn down to a coal bed, your next reload will take off like crazy.

That is, assuming you have good, dry, seasoned wood...

Enjoy your new stove! Any other questions you have can be answered prior to getting the stove by simply going to Hearthstones website and downloading the owners manual as a pdf file. You bought a nice little stove made by a great company.

I have the same stove. If you were to put a grate in there, you wouldn't have room to put hardly any firewood in. The firebox is TINY. But they are nice stoves. I think you will like it.
