Do you think that burning a combination of wood and coal helps to counteract the effects of the acid present in the coal ash.
Wood ash is toward the Alkaline on the PH Scale right?

usually a combination thereof, however, any concerns to coal being acidic are related primarily to the chimney system; thus wood ash being a base will not have any effect. mixing wood and coal at the same time is generally not a good idea, and will cause problems with proper combustion of either. additionally, even alternating frequently between wood and coal is not a good idea because of the moisture in wood which can combine with the acids present in your chimney from burning coal and cause premature deteriation. I do this from time to time, but as i have a masonry chimney lined with clay tile the acids will do little damage in my lifetime, as it is in perfect shape and has been used with coal/wood for almost 80 years.
