Wood explodes on splitter

I had that happen the first time I split maple, caught my shin, now I'm always leary and make sure I'm not in the wsy.
 
You know when the round might explode. I have a 40 ton splitter. When it is going full bore and the splitter head has penetrated into the wood about 1 inch and is not moving anymore, you have to double check to see if you really have the handle pushed forward. 5 seconds pass with no progress and it feels like 5 minutes. Note to self, back up.
