Here are two seperate blow down trees that I cut up. There weren’t really any limbs to help ID the branching pattern. I am thinking they both might be red maple or some kind of maple though.

The first two pics are from the first tree and the second two pics are from the second tree. Thanks for the help!

Possibly not. Some of the bark is too deeply furrowed not typical of Red Maple. The wood is too deteriorated to go by the grain shown. Maybe Ash? Kevin

no, I don't think that looks like red maple.

I'm not sure what all kinds of trees you have up there. maybe some kind of elm?

In this area of the woods there are mainly ash, oak, shag bark hickory, beech, and maple trees. I don’t think it’s elm, there is elm in this location , but I’ve only seen small ones.

What’s left of the grain on the second tree looks like Ash to me. The bark doesn’t though, so I’m not sure what I’ve got.

It looks a lot like the silver maple I have been splitting lately. It’s been dead for a few years like what you have there and it even has the punky marks your logs have.

I'm going to guess sugar maple, and spalted at that... wanna sell some?

pics on left Hard Maple, Pics on right also most likely H. Maple.

Thanks for the help guys so sugar maple it is! Of course I’d sell some spalted maple! Looks like I cut it up before it turned too punky. Only some spots are punked.

It’s when the wood is first attacked by a fungus and is just starting to deteriorate. Those black lines are spalting. Woodworkers like it because it can make for interesting looking pieces.

Spalted maple

And yes it is like gold to some woodworkers, I would burn up the really punky stuff and sell the rest.

You think someone would want 16-18” rounds of it? What could it be worth? Maybe I’ll try to sell some before I split it up for firewood.

I would advertise it on craigslist, or if you know some local woodworkers talk to them. I wouldn't be afraid to ask 20 or 30 bucks per round depending on the diameter. I just sold an 18" long 12" diameter oak round for $50 to a local woodworker.

Turningblanks is selling 12" x 4" spalted maple bowl blanks for $42.00 apeice.

Thanks I’ll give it a shot, I have almost a face cord of it. Some is up to 16” or more diameter.

That size I would actually up the cost. Especially if is not to punky and there is quite a bit of solid wood left. You can always take a round and noodle it to see what you have inside.
