I was given access to a tree graveyard with bucked up wood everywhere. I found this type among the piles but can't identify the wood. Under that thick bark was a paper-like covering. Any ideas what kind of wood?

My first guess was it might be an old black gum. But even if it was, I’ve heard it’s not good firewood.
