We put in a Jotul 550 insert this winter, which worked great. One problem, when it rained hard or snow melted we could hear water dripping on the top of the stove. At the time of installation it was identified that we need a new chimney crown, but the weather was too cold. Fortunately there was a warm-up a few days later, warm enough to pour concrete, but unfortunately the guys did not bring the right ladders from their shop, so no new crown. In the time that followed we saw water condense and drip inside the air vent slot when the warm air blows out, but no rust. The weather was relatively dry with the occasionsal snow.

Fast forward four plus weeks and we finally get the new crown, but there were still drips, followed by several storms with over 1" of rain. Now the rust has taken hold, there is a large pool of it, about 12" in diameter, visible in the air vent. The last time I tried a fire, well after the break-in smell was gone, a new odor erupted due to the rust.

This week the dealer sent out one of the more qualified guys to identify the drip problem, and it turns out the original installer put on the wrong cap, one that is too small. They are going to install the correct cap, and want to grind all of the rust off of the stove.

So here is my question, should I even let them try, or should I just demand a new stove? I won't mind if they are successful, but I don't want recurring problems. Thanks for the help.

As recent as it is, if it was me I would let them remove the rust. I would want something from them in writing showing that if this rust developed into a problem down the line, that they would stand behind it. I wouldnt count on anything bad happening though.

Should be surface rust. What they will do is wire wheel the rust then repaint the area. Perfectly fine fix. Whether or not your accepting to that is how tough a customer you choice to be.
As long as they are handling all this with no cost to you, I would give them the opportunity to rectify the problem. I would also ask for it to be addressed in writing and a guarantee that if the repair fails, they will warrant that &/or then replace the stove. Should be no big deal to refinish.
Also, your not going to see the top of that thing anyways. But should be made right at this point.

I was happy to just have a fire in the middle of the cave and bask in the glow. Its all you civilized folks that ruined it for us with all your damn fancy steel, cast, stone & regulations. Damn houses, If yall just kept a cave, there would be no combustibles! Piping, stacks, caps... in the good ol days we just let the damn breeze blowing through the cave vent the smoke out, but nooooo not now!
Ah the good ol days, when ya could just club her over the head and drag her & her friend back to the cave by their hair..... Damn technology!

so.........
It was YOU responsible for this population explosion............????????????
her & her friend !!!
