We put in a Jotul 550 insert this winter, which worked great. One problem, when it rained hard or snow melted we could hear water dripping on the top of the stove. At the time of installation it was identified that we need a new chimney crown, but the weather was too cold. Fortunately there was a warm-up a few days later, warm enough to pour concrete, but unfortunately the guys did not bring the right ladders from their shop, so no new crown. In the time that followed we saw water condense and drip inside the air vent slot when the warm air blows out, but no rust. The weather was relatively dry with the occasionsal snow.
Fast forward four plus weeks and we finally get the new crown, but there were still drips, followed by several storms with over 1" of rain. Now the rust has taken hold, there is a large pool of it, about 12" in diameter, visible in the air vent. The last time I tried a fire, well after the break-in smell was gone, a new odor erupted due to the rust.
This week the dealer sent out one of the more qualified guys to identify the drip problem, and it turns out the original installer put on the wrong cap, one that is too small. They are going to install the correct cap, and want to grind all of the rust off of the stove.
So here is my question, should I even let them try, or should I just demand a new stove? I won't mind if they are successful, but I don't want recurring problems. Thanks for the help.
