it looks like a yellow pine to me. There are several species of pine with yellowish wood. I would think you'd smell pine if I were right.

I take that back. I actually found a standing mulberry tree on my property line with bark similar to the one pictured. The bark flakes up heavy like that around the spot where a branch dies and falls off. It appears to be the same situation as the bark in your picture.Yeah, that bark doesn't scream mulberry to me.
