Had a power outage yesterday. Waited about 2 hours to see if it would come back on, it didn't, so I brought up the power packs and went to hook up the Prius to use as a generator. Doh, garage door closed, used a battery pack to jump it up a few inches to get the plug through. Had to wrestle the fridge out of its slot, very tight opening.

Unplugged the fridge and plugged into the prepositioned other end of the cord from the inverter. Fridge came on and ran for about 10 seconds before-- you guessed it, power returned.

Did that myself many years ago. In the summer I built a generator using a lawn edger motor and car alternator. Really proud of my creation. That winter the power went out and I strutted out to fire it up. Took forever to get the damn thing to start and just as it did the power came back on.

In the past year our power company PSE has improved their outage reporting. We get them fairly frequently in our area so this is a handy service. You can call or you can visit their outage map on their website if you have a UPS on the computer and see the size of the outage, how many homes are affected and the estimated time for the power to come back on. If you have a smartphone they have an app for it. Last year that service saved me a lot of genset hookup time. If an outage is for four hours or less we just ride it out. Guess I need to take a minute to go up to their website and tell them how much I appreciate this service.

Unfortunately, our power company reaks. Our town is small and they don't put the effort into maintenance. I'm gonna take the advice and wait at least 4 hours in the winter; summer is a different story.

Hmm, hope not up in Marblehead. My SIL has no wood heat. Fingers crossed they have it wrong for eastern Mass.

Hope she has a generator, that's right on the coast., heavy wet snow and 60+ gusts.
