Well, I've done it. I turned down a slam-dunk scrounge today. I got home & heard the intoxicating scream of chainsaws & the mighty roar of a big chipper. Tree Service at work!!
I was on baby duty for an hour, then another hour of chores before I finally got out to track down the action. I found my favorite local tree guys finishing-up for the day. By the time I got there everything was chipped except the trunks, but there was still a grapple-truck full of Oak & Silver Maple that they offered to drop at my place. SO I PASSED!?!
The Oak was hollowed out, gnarly & looked about impossible to split & the Silver Maple was pretty twisted & crotchy as well. I'm 2 years ahead with a small yard & have a lot on my plate with a new baby & plenty of other projects... blah, blah, blah, it still felt just wrong. I know it would have been a tough slog, & I'll get better stuff at a better time but there was somewhere around 2-3 cords on that truck that are now at the dump. ;sick
I did call a fellow wood-burner, but he wasn't interested (he generally buys his wood split & delivered in fall & burns it green).
This just feels wrong, like that wood needed a home & I just slammed the door in it's face.

I don't blame you for passing. I'm going to get a lot more picky once I get done with the stuff I'm committed to already. Storm season is here; There will be plenty of wood to be gotten.
Maybe that guy you offered the wood to has a phobia about bugs in wood, and doesn't want it around unless he can burn it up quick. I believe there are quite a few people around that think like that. Or maybe he just likes that stinky creosote smell... ;lol

I am also at that point, with last winters reduced usage I am overflowing with wood, and yet while I have stopped looking on CL I still have some in mind that I need to buck, but that is BL and I could always store that in the round right, if only I had a spot to hide it from the wife.

I too understand.
I have several people wanting me to take down some trees.
I still have several on a lot that I committed too.
18-20" cherry and ash the perfect size tall and straight.

I will take the cherry and ash. I do not want the other stuff, sorry.

Ha - I finally figured it out HDC - HEARTH Dot Com

Nothing gets by THIS guy.;lol

Sorry Jags, didn't mean to give you a headache. ;lol
Think I've seen the acronym on here before from some of the more savy members :)

Great that you are far enough ahead to be selective.
Time will tell if the "free wood gods" are still smiling down on you :)

I know the feeling. My tree guy called a few weeks back with a big maple he was taking down. He said it was probably 2 cords!!.

I HAD to say NO;sick. I just wasn't set up to take it. Too much stuff in the way where he normally dumps and it would have been more work if he dumped elsewhere.

It does feel wrong. Oh well.

I am having a tough time forgiving you. Some things are just wrong. I keep thinking of that poor tree trunk buried under trash.

Sometimes you gotta pass it up. I've turned several jobs away, mainly because I just have too much wood, and didn't need the stuff. So I bid them high. Did the high-bid thing with two big maple trees this spring that were borderline NIGHTMARE jobs, and the guy jumped all over the price!! So I did the job, got twice the money and ended up with a chitload of norway maple (which is almost as good as sugar maple in my book). Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do........

Just had friend call tonight. I had not talked to him since fall and he ask me if I had been up to his woods over the winter to cut any. (I usually cut there every year some and just keep the leaners or wind dmged trees cleaned up) I had called him around September like I always do to make sure it was ok and he said no problem just let me know when you are there. I just said I did not burn much this winter which happen to be the truth but did not want to tell him I cut more this year than any other year. I don't want him getting ideas of finding someone else to keep that woods cleaned up. ;)

Not a sin, midwestcoast. Only a blip on the radar screen- but yeah, we know what you mean.. it just seems wrong to pass up wood fuel. At least you called another burner. No penance required.

Thanks all. I guess the Catholics are on to something: Confession does make it all better ;)

Thank you S-O. I was wondering how N Maple burns and was not sure if it is considered a soft or hard maple. We have no sugar maple down here, but i did come upon about 12 nice big (20"+) rounds of N maple and it split nicely. Glad to hear it will burn well next winter too. A pretty wood too.
