Thanks. Yes I do. It's the anal retentive part of the engineer in me. I have to label the two racks in the first picture yet, but I just got done stacking the elm one today. It's just kind of fun to remember back where they came from. Gives me pause to appreciate those who let me scrounge their land.
Very nice, and very true. I like reminiscing when it's the middle of winter and a particular split (and oddball one or such) pops up when hauling wood out of the stacks and into the basement....sometimes I can remember to a TEE the weather that day, and the hard work of cutting that particular tree down.....
Sorry, I get a little emotional when talking about my woodstack!;em

You are right on about remembering what it was like when you gathered the wood from somewhere...especially the difficult ones, or the ones I sweated alot on.

Odd...that's how I got my wife to like me...small world

You too huh? It is a small world. Don't think the cat will hang around for 39 years.

Back on topic. Nice racks.

the maul came with the house...even before I had a stove I had a maul. I guess I figured since I have a maul, why not get a stove.

Man, I'm glad you didn't buy a house that turned out to have some sort of a torture chamber in the cellar. !!!

Back in the 80's everybody lusted for a monster maul. Until they hefted the thing for a bit. Fortunately before I bought one I discovered that head speed with a six or eight pound maul would get it done. But then when, in 1988, the shock to the shoulders did its due I discovered that God invented hydraulic log splitters if you plan to do this stuff for a long time.

She is a heavy girl...if I was Catholic I would call it penance for past sins. LOL.

Hated cats my whole life. Not that crazy about dogs either and never had a pet for 61 years. Then the little girl showed up in the stacks one day five years ago maybe a year old and a wild runaway. Took us four months to make friends.

And as they say, the rest is history. Laying by the chair wanting back out as I type.

I originally called her Barack, it was during the summer of the 2008 election. After we got to be friends I noticed I needed to change the name to Michelle. >>
Pretty cat.

Bet you can even remember the smells that day, Scotty. Funny how that works.

It's heavy and I have to where gloves to keep it from flying from hand but it gets the job done...and it's orange!
How long can you swing that thing before your shoulders fall off?

I'm really glad I had the maul when I first started burning. First season I only had access to dead cottonwood that was out in the open. Even with that big girl it still would bounce on the first strike.

Good work Schlot. I remember splitting one log with one of those beasts. It was at a friend's house and I just had to try it out. I swung that thing exactly 2 times and had enough of it.

A few years ago somebody posted a picture of their new wood rack. Post after post complimented it while I resisted saying what I was thinking. Eventually a new lady member who is now a regular broke the ice posting: "Somebody has to say it. Nice rack.". ;lol

Nice stout racks... I was warned about stacking wood near the house (about 5 feet away) for fear of insects and critters. Any worries here?

Nice racks, stacks, and labels. Those labels have got to be good for some additional bonus points in the FHC, Ltd don't you think Scotty?

BTW Schlot are those racks made out of pressure treated or just normal lumber? Nice little "uglies/oddball" bin I see as well.

Ok, they aren't much compared to some of you guys..probably most of you guys, but here are the wood racks I have at my house.
Better than my racks, which consist of a couple of dead Sass logs on the ground, or some pallets on bricks. ;lol Lookin' good, schlot! There is one thing that would make those racks better; Some high-output wood. I don't think it is all shoulder season in IA, is it? :p;)

That is a "monster maul".
The one, the only, the original (judging by the paint color.)

Wow, that axe looks as old as that car! Is that a steel handle? Ouch?
'80s vintage. The shock transmitted to the hands is brutal, even with the rubber handle. <> Light grip is definitely helpful at impact. Thing is awesome, though. Schlot is tearing up Elm with it, if that tells you anything.... >>
Still need to weld mine up....

I never liked cats....our neighbor's cat thinks he is a dog.....You just can't help but like that bugger.
They all have different personalities, just like dogs. Cats 'r cool.

Yeah the real hard woods have been a bit illusive to me (except the mulberry) but at least they beat cottonwood I began with! Lol

Yes I used treated 2x6. Started with scrap stuff but last few I bought.

my one buddy STILL uses a monster maul occasionaly........and yes, we both have hydraulic splitters.
I have a 8lb all steel maul that I use on occasion.....but having the hydraulics spoils you, especially on this tough crotches and snarly, stringy rounds......

Mulberry is Cadillac wood, for sure. We have a few Crottenwoods around here but I never burned any. I did toss a cotton ball in the stove once, just to see what it would be like.... ==c
Wait it out; The good stuff will roll your way soon. :)

Same here. I won't hand-split unless the stuff I have will split pretty easy. It's fun to send the Ash or Oak splits flyin' wit da Monstah!
