You are cutting Yellow Poplar!

Well thanks for the picture but thats not what ive ben cutting, like i said dark heart wood like walnut but its kinda olive green and a little purple once split. Splits great! The bark sure looks like ash to me.

latrapper, I agree with nrford. Sounds like tulip poplar. Has a bark similar to ash, and greenish heartwood. Difference between green ash and white ash is more with the leaves than the bark or the wood.

Crap, ive ben cutting poplar all winter?

I think you meant to say:

"Poplar, I have been cutting crap all winter!"
Just looked up yellow poplar on google, nothing like what ive ben cutting, they say yellow poplar is rare in iowa and the tree i ben cutting is everywhere. How do u post a picture on here? All i got is my stupid smart phone and can barely use it. Im sure with a picture we could figure this out.

The "upload a file" button on the reply box. Lower right corner. Turn the phone sideways when you take the pic with a phone or it will show up sideways on here.

I tried to post a picture but didnt work, ill give it a try again tomarow

Think i got the picture to post. Anyone no what this is? I no it looks like walnut but once its split its olive green in color.

Sure looks like walnut to me...

Walnut. It's normal (or at least common) for it to be rather greenish when fresh cut.

I no it sure looks like walnut but ive cut some that i no were walnut and they sure look different. Ive ben cutting almost all downed trees, a few were still alive but all had the green core with a little purple. Ill get some better pictures of it tonight when i get home. Maybe u guys r right but it sure dont look like walnut to me. Oh and most of the walnuts ben loged outa where im cutting.

walnut. Around here (ohio) it turns brown the same day you cut it,, and darker brown the next day. The loggers don't take the crooked, small, limbs and tops, or "less then perfect" walnut. It is not gold like some people think. We burn it regularly around here.

If you find a long straight trunk,,it may be worth more money then firewood. I can't remember the smallest diameter they will buy.

We logged for walnut 3 years ago,, and I still have lots of walnut trees left that were "unworthy"

You wanted me to post a picture of what you've been cutting?

i think i own one of those "log turners" like in the back of your truck. I wish you would come visit so i could sneak another one into your truck to get rid of it! LOL,,, I bent mine the 2nd day after my wife brought it home.

It just lays around,,,nobody wants to take it home. (not the wife)

i think he wanted a pic of green ash to see if it looked like the trees he is cutting. He thought it was green ash because of the green color walnut is,, when first exposed to the air before it turns brown.

But if you are magic,,,could you post a pic of what i will split tomorrow?

Yes, the purple nails it as BW. I have some beautiful counters that have the purple in them.

I'm just funnin' latrap :).

IDK what you're splitting tomorrow but you better make sure that log turners in good repair. Not magic, Murphy ;lol.

Yes the log roller is junk but does work decent on the really big logs, it was free so cant complain to much. I had no idea walnut could look like that. Ill still try and get some more pictures on tonight. Im not the greatest tree identifier, thanks for the info u guys.
