Wood stove liner confusion

I'm looking to install a drolet 1800 or equivalent in my basement fireplace. Chimney in the center of house, 5 flues, I figure 30' from basement to top of house. The chimney has a slate cover over it, built up on a few bricks.

I'm seeking suggestions on specific liners and sellers for my application.

fyi the drolet 1800I with 25ft of 6inch stainless liner, a top plate, cap, connector, and faceplate currenty is $1350 plus shipping.

I always recommend heavy or mid weight liners. We never install light wall for wood stoves. They will work but they are not as durable. And yes you should insulate it for performance reasons and it is probably required to meet code.

What make? Did you insulate it?

I bought whichever was the top of the line then. I believe it was the HD? This was about a year ago. I didn't have enough room for the wrap insulation, so I did the pour down type.

Okay, just had a quote from a sweep/installer that lives locally. He's csia certified.

Install, insulated liner, block off plate, all connections for $1500. That also includes removing/replacing my 4' x 3' slate chimney cap. All code install.

Oh BTW, this install would make 4 functioning, routinely used wood stoves for me. As the lady from that classic movie Stranger Than Paradise would say, "I am de vinner".

Yeah but what thickness. Any liner can come in 316. But really 304 is all you need for wood. You can save some money that way 304 is quite a bit cheaper than 316

well anything that is listed for use with a wood stove is acceptable the thinnest i know of being .005" but i prefer mid or heavy weight which is .01" or .013" i believe. I am not positive on the numbers for the thicker stuff

Create a flange by attaching a 1.5" aluminum "L" painted black to the inside opening of the fireplace or attach a 2" wide strip of sheet metal painted black to the backside of the surround.

That is about as thin as it gets.

"attach" ? putting anything through wouldn't look right.

By attaching the black L metal to the sides of the fireplace opening you will create a 3/4" thin black edge on each side of the opening that the surround will snug up against. It will be barely noticeable.

oh, you mean with masonry screws to the inside on the opening.

Yes, mounted inside and flush with the front of the fireplace opening. Or you could have a couple strips of sheet metal cut up and painted black. These could be held on the back edges of the sides as extensions with some strong mini-magnets.

WoodstovePro.com used to be dynamite buys. I have bought from them in the past and had good service. The price is about average. Insert sells for $1K at most places online so that means $629 for a 25ft liner kit. I know nothing about Vortex but it appears to be made by SBI. Their stove pipe is very nice so if the Vortex product is heavy-duty and as nice this could be a decent deal. It's pricey so I would check on this. I would call and get details about this liner and its wall thickness. Ask for Sean when calling them.

For comparison chimneylinerdepot's basic 35ft liner kit is $435, but may be much lighter gauge. Let us know what you find out about the Vortex product.
