If you were wealthy enough to be able to easily afford all the fuel oil, gas, or electric you could possibly consume-- would you still mess around with firewood?

I'm 40 years old but my dad always and still does burn wood. Just in the last few months I've started really looking for ways to cut back and I figured that running a stove would ease our $200 a month power bill. This is not much compared to many but if I could cut it in half by just burning wood then I'd be happy. Now if it cut it $30 ill be pissed. That said, if I was rich, I'd go flip the heat on. Maybe ill get used to it once I get ahead on wood but right now it's killing me trying to keep the damp, green wood going.

The stoves would be at the scrap yard in a heartbeat.

I'm certainly not wealthy enough to afford all the fuel oil, gas, or electric I could possibly consume. (that's what you asked). But I certainly am wealthy enough to afford all that I would ever need to consume. I still enjoy "messing around" with firewood. Rick

This is a perfect statement. I don't NEED to. Yet I do. I save money, have a hobby, and show my children a little hard work In between.

Yes I would. Nothing can beat wood heat==c Its cruising away downstairs at 750 and the heat feels so good on a cold windy night. Wouldn't give it up for NOTHING!!

The money I save on oil, using wood instead, makes me rich in other aspects of my life ;)

I'm pretty sure I've managed to spend much more on heating with wood, than I've saved in oil, my first two seasons in this house. No plans to stop now, though.

No matter how much money you had, the power would still go out. Generators can die.

So, yeah, I'd still have a stove or three. I'd just use a chit load less firewood.

At this point, though, with the challenges I am facing, I am seriously looking at a pellet add-on furnace to keep an even heat throughout the house and use the stoves to boost the temps to my liking. But, we'll see what the next 4-5 years of insulation offers in terms of limiting the massive heat loss I am dealing with.

I would probably be living in warmer climes, but would still have a wood stove.

Might have wood delivered instead of going out there myself.....probably would not heat 100% with just wood..but how can you beat a good fire, look at my avatar.....how can you beat that?

Says the guy posting pictures of flowers blooming on March 3rd. ;)

Tough call, but it would be hard to justify all these saws and a splitter to the wife if I was burning wood "recreationally".

I'm sure I'd have a small fireplace of some sort to burn olive wood in Kassiopi Corfu.

yes. because other fuels have their good points and bad points too. I like the type of heat that comes from wood-not as hot/searing of a flame as gas. However, if I had a lot of money I would use a lot more electric heat, especially 220 volt, because it is clean, instant and efficient. However, the electric rates where I live are high. New York State slaps the consumer with taxes and tariffs on top of usage too.

Where are you? I'm Ulster county (NYSEG) and we pay around $0.11/kwH for peak electric. $0.09 for off-peak.

I live on the big island of Hawaii can go to the beech any time I wont bought a house on manua loa at 2700 feet so I could burn could not imagine not having a wood stove

Absolutely!
I'd pick up a few hundred acres up north with an old farm on it and work the land, cutting wood and happily taking care of myself and my family.
Ahhh, one can dream.

I do this already and it is a lot of work. 294 acres of full time vacation; yeah right.

If you own a big piece of property I have concluded that you need at least the purchase price of the property set aside in investments for the upkeep and maintenance of that property over and above what you need for living expenses.

I think so too! I would have a huge property in the middle of nowhere and all the toys! At this point I am very interested in masonary heaters. I would very much like to build one in the future. I have a friend in Pa with one, very cool. I would never be bored just hunt, fish, cut wood etc. Actually thats pretty much what I do in the winter now, and plow snow.

That is my exact plan if I ever win the lottery, I hardly ever play the lottery though.
