Blower question

I looking into an wood insert but was wondering about the blower. My wife's uncle is telling me to not do a insert because you can't really run it without the blower for long periods of time. Is this correct? And if not how long could I run the insert without the blower and not have any problems? The insert works best for my masonry fireplace but if I have to rely on electric then it defeats the purpose.

You can run the insert without the blower, but it's a lot more effective with the blower running. Some inserts have a big glass that throws tons of heat. My Cape Cod pours heat out of the glass, it's unbelievable how hot it is in front of that glass. Check them out. http://www.lopistoves.com/product-detail.aspx?model=422

Pick out the insert you like then read the manual. Some recommend using the blower at all times. On others the blower is not needed. I know my unit does not need the blower. It heats better with the blower but is safe to operate without it. When we have no power I remove the surround to get as much heat as possible. The surround on mine is a simple slide on/slide off design and takes about 2 minutes to remove or install.

I don't think this info is correct bc I believe some inserts have blowers that are optional.

I really doubt you could melt it.

Inserts that extend a bit out onto the hearth do better at heating with the blower off.
